The Fast Nine session began slowly, with each of the first four cars to go out putting in an average speed at 230.6 MPH or below. That would be slower than the fastest lap of the day for all of the top four qualifiers. When Rinus VeeKay began his run, the pace picked up quickly. VeeKay and teammate Ed Carpenter were the only two Chevrolet drivers in the Fast Nine field. Each managed first laps in the 232.3 MPH range, nearly a full MPH over the then-best time of Ryan Hunter-Reay. Each held on to finish their runs at 231.5 MPH. With teammates of the final two cars, from Chip Ganassi Racing and Andretti Autosport, already failing to show real speed, it looked like it could be enough ....
