Since the coronavirus gripped New Jersey last March, nonprofit groups and social agencies operating in the state have worked to help those who have been hit hardest.
This resource guide features groups that work to help those with the greatest need. For those so inclined, there are myriad opportunities to assist the nonprofits and agencies do their work. Organizations welcome volunteers as well as donations of money, food, clothing and other goods.

MACOMB The boards of the Western Illinois Regional Council and its Community Action Agency were told this week about the number of programs and grants available to thousands of people in McDonough, Warren, Hancock, Henderson, and Knox counties.
Director Tracy Camden said 1,900 households were funded through the LIHEAP program, and 20 of the homes had their furnaces repaired or replaced in 2020. She said 50 homes received weatherization grants and the CAA also received $1.75 million in housing rehabilitation grants.
Camden said member counties received 6,700 pounds of deer meat from the Hunters Helping the Hungry program, and that 397 children received gifts through Project Santa. She said WIRC Victim Services provided 1,800 programs on domestic violence and 6,000 programs and counseling sessions on sexual assault. ....

Over the course of the past 10 months, many organizations and individuals have worked to get food to New Jerseyans in need.
In fact, some groups have massaged their missions in order to help those who have felt the economic impact of the coronavirus.
One such organization is Grow It Green Morristown, which works to create sustainable farms and gardens, and educate communities on healthy eating and environmental stewardship.
Lisa Alexander, executive director of the nonprofit said, “In 2020, determined to serve, Grow It Green modified programs and focused resources to meet the needs of our community in crisis. We provided equitable and sustained access to fresh, local food, outdoor spaces and activities, and education about the environment and health in a year when food insecurity, racial equity and climate change issues were brought to the forefront.” ....

Prescribed burns set for Lakepoint State Park

If you’re inclined to smoke allergies, you may want to call Lakepoint State Park before heading there for a camping, fishing or hunting trip over the next several months. Two prescribed burns are planned to take place on park lands sometime between Tuesday, January 19 and March 2021, weather permitting.
The first planned burn will take place in an area of recently planted longleaf pine located near the campground. The second burn will take place in an area adjacent to the lodge and cabins. The parks division says efforts will be made to ensure safety and proper smoke management during the burns, and the project is permitted by the Alabama Forestry Commission. ....
