Letter from scientists: Investigate the origins of COVID-19

 E-Mail
More investigation is needed to determine the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic, say Jesse Bloom, Alina Chan, Ralph Baric, David Relman and colleagues in this Letter. Theories of accidental release from a lab and zoonotic spillover both remain viable, they say. Knowing how COVID-19 emerged is critical for informing global strategies to mitigate the risk of future outbreaks. The authors highlight a joint China-World Health Organization (WHO) report into the origins of SARS-CoV-2, some results of which were released in November 2020. WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus commented that the report s consideration of evidence supporting a laboratory accident was insufficient, they note. As scientists with relevant expertise, we agree with the WHO director-general, the United States and 13 other countries, and the European Union that greater clarity about the origins of this pandemic is necessary and feasible to achieve, they say. They call for an investigation tha ....

QUT air-quality expert Distinguished Professor Lidia Morawska is leading an international call for a paradigm shift in combating airborne pathogens such as COVID-19, demanding universal recognition that infections can be prevented by improving indoor ventilation systems.
Professor Morawska led a group of almost 40 researchers from 14 countries in a call published in
Science for a shift in standards in ventilation requirements equal in scale to the transformation in the 1800s when cities started organising clean water supplies and centralised sewage systems. ....

New ebolavirus vaccine design seeks to drive stronger antibody defense

 E-Mail
LA JOLLA, CA Scientists at Scripps Research have unveiled a new Ebola virus vaccine design, which they say has several advantages over standard vaccine approaches for Ebola and related viruses that continue to threaten global health.
In the new design, described in a paper in
Nature Communications, copies of the Ebola virus outer spike protein, known as the glycoprotein, are tethered to the surface of a spherical carrier particle. The resulting structure resembles the spherical appearance of common RNA viruses that infect humans and is starkly different from the snake-like shape of the Ebola virus.
The scientists say the design is intended to stimulate a better protective immune response than standard vaccine approaches, which often expose the immune system to individual glycoproteins rather than realistic-looking virus particles. ....

Low risk of infection in babies born to mothers with COVID-19

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet and the Public Health Agency of Sweden have studied newborn babies whose mothers tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 during pregnancy or childbirth. The results show that although babies born of test-positive mothers are more likely to be born early, extremely few were infected with COVID-19. The study, which is published in the esteemed journal JAMA, supports the Swedish recommendation not to separate mother and baby after delivery. ....

A new way of rapidly counting and identifying viruses

A Lancaster University professor has introduced a new concept for rapidly analysing for the presence of a virus from colds to coronaviruses. However, although the concept can identify that someone has a type of coronavirus for example, it would not be able to determine the type of coronavirus, or variants. Additional tests would still be required to find out the specific virus someone was infected with. ....
