UK bans travel from 4 more nations over virus; 39 in all

LONDON (AP) â The British government is gearing up to ban international arrivals from four more countries â Bangladesh, Kenya, Pakistan and the Philippines â amid concerns over new virus variants but opted against including European nations that are facing a resurgence of the virus.
The Department for Transport said Friday the number of countries on its âred listâ will reach 39 when the latest restrictions take effect in England beginning April 9. The other nations of the U.K. â Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland â have similar lists.
Under the travel bans, international visitors who have departed from or traveled through red-list countries in the preceding 10 days are refused entry into England. Countries on the list include Brazil and South Africa, where two of the most concerning virus variants have been identified. ....

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Researchers in the Oregon State University College of Science have taken a key step toward new drugs and vaccines for combating COVID-19 with a deep dive into one protein s interactions with SARS-CoV-2 genetic material.
The virus nucleocapsid protein, or N protein, is a prime target for disease-fighting interventions because of the critical jobs it performs for the novel coronavirus infection cycle and because it mutates at a comparatively slow pace. Drugs and vaccines built around the work of the N protein carry the potential to be highly effective and for longer periods of time - i.e., less susceptible to resistance. ....

U.S. Grant Gave Money to the Wuhan Lab to Enhance Coronaviruses, the Decision Wasn't Even Scrutinized

The United States gave a grant of $600,000 to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and the decision wasn’t even scrutinized by the agency Dr. Anthony Fauci heads up. This per a new report from The Daily Caller which lays out in detail exactly how the transfer happened and the lack of oversight involved.
An oversight board created to scrutinize research that would enhance highly dangerous pathogens did not review a National Institutes of Health grant that funded a lab in Wuhan, China, to genetically modify bat-based coronaviruses.
Experts say the NIH grant describes scientists conducting gain-of-function research, a risky area of study that, in this case, made SARS-like viruses even more contagious. Federal funding for gain-of-function research was temporarily suspended in 2014 due to widespread scientific concerns it risked leaking supercharged viruses into the human population. ....

In the fight against cancers, activating mutations in the RAS family of genes stand in the way of finding viable treatment options. Now, scientists at the University of Missouri and Yale University have discovered that one of these mutations oncogenic RAS or RASV12 is also responsible for the regrowth of cancer cells following genotoxic therapy treatment, or drugs that cause damage to a cancer cell s DNA in order to eliminate it from the body.
Most of our knowledge of how cells respond to DNA damage is mainly derived from studies looking at the single cell level, said Yves Chabu, an assistant professor in the MU College of Arts and Science. NASHVILLE Tennessee’s State Veterinarian wants to make citizens aware that an outbreak of rabbit hemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) has been detected near the Tennessee border in Arkansas. There have been no cases found in Tennessee, but rabbit owners should be mindful of the heightened risk.
Rabbit hemorrhagic disease does not affect humans or other animals. However, it is highly contagious and fatal to domestic rabbits, wild hares, and pika. RHDV2 can be transmitted through direct contact with infected rabbits or carcasses, meat or fur, feces, bodily fluids, bedding material, feed and water bowls, and hay. ....
