A dream come true: a new life for an old school – Fluvanna Review

The drawing depicts figures in a line, marching up a hill, some adults, some children, musicians, puppeteers, actors, singers, and artists. This picture was found among all the memorabilia that was saved by the Fluvanna County Arts Council since its beginning in 1992.
It began with a group of 30 people who formed the council, including Jeff Suling (original director of the Fluvanna Community Singers), Horace Scruggs (fourth director of the FCS and current board member), Drs. Denae and Sam Babbitt of the Fork Union Animal Clinic, Carol Lavigne, John Gill, Bonnie Field, Marilyn Pignoni, Don and Maureen (Mo) Cahill (who started Persimmon Tree Players), and Josephine Snead (drama teacher at the old high school). Josephine Snead saw the project as an extension of Fluvanna County’s pride in educating residents. ....

Community Connection: Honoring Beryl Solla, WNRN’s Culture Monkey
Piedmont Virginia Community College is celebrating the life and legacy of Beryl Solla, WNRN’s own Culture Monkey, who passed away in February. As the chair of PVCC’s art department for over 15 years, Beryl nurtured students, curated original exhibits supporting regional artists, and initiated events and programs like Let There Be Light, Chocolate Chow Down, Art Day for high school students, and more.
PVCC’s exhibit,
Solla World: The Hailing and Wailing Wall for Beryl, invites those who were touched by Solla’s work to create and post an homage, share memories and messages on the gallery wall and view works of art created in memoriam. Flowers are welcome. The exhibition is located in the North Gallery of the V. Earl Dickinson Building, and is open Monday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m, through May 22 ....
