Rutledge announces retirement, succession plan for Farmers Mutual Hail

Farmers Mutual Hail Insurance Co. of Iowa announced that Ronald Rutledge (left) will retire from his position as president and CEO effective Dec. 30. Rutledge has led the national farm insurance company since January 2011, and has worked at the company for 40 years. He will remain in his role as chairman of the company’s board of directors and continue serving on his current industry board seats. He will be succeeded by his nephew Shannon Rutledge (right), who is currently executive vice president and chief operating officer, as well as secretary and member of the company’s board of directors. “Under Ron’s leadership, FMH has experienced unprecedented growth and innovation,” Shannon Rutledge said in a news release. The company added a property/casualty division in 2011 and grew from a regional crop insurance provider to a national crop insuranc ....

Washington Girls End Season in Regional Semis


Running into a buzzsaw that is the #5 ranked Sabers of Central DeWitt was the challenge for the Washington girls’ basketball team on Saturday and the Demon season came to an end with a 75-31 loss in a class 4A regional semifinal.
As heard on KCII, Alex Murphy had the game’s first point of the night on a turn around jumper at the free throw line, but the home Sabers quickly answered with a 17-0 run on the strength of turning the Demons over in the press. The score was 30-15 at the break and a 25-9 Central DeWitt third quarter quickly put the game to bed. The Sabers forced 16 steals and hit 11 threes including five from Taylor Veach and the junior finished with a game-high 28 points. Anna Nacos led Washington with 12 points and Murphy tallied 11. Head Coach Shannon Rugg tells KCII Sports he was proud of how his team continued to fight. “I am really proud of our girls. We had nothing to lose tonight so I told them to go out there, put it all on the line, and see what happen ....

Demons Girls Pick Up Second Win Over Grayhounds, Boys Retake SEC Lead


A pair of Washington basketball teams left the hardwood happy last night when they won tight games against Southeast Conference foe Burlington.
As heard on KCII, the Demon girls got out to a fast 11-4 start with transition points and attacking a leaky Grayhound defense. Burlington (0-12) settled in to make it an 18-13 game at half and they came out hot in the third to tie it up at 26-all after three. The fourth quarter had several lead changes, but free throws were the difference down the stretch with the Demons prevailing 36-35. Washington made 12 of 18 from the charity stripe compared to Burlington’s four of six. Anna Nacos led the way on the home court with 11 points and Alex Murphy managed a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. ....

Demon Girls Drop SEC Opener with Panthers, Boys Hang On


Southeast Conference play finally got started for the Washington basketball teams last night against Mount Pleasant and the schools split on the evening.
The girls’ game in Washington was heard on KCII and the Demons were on the short end of a 71-52 score. After a tough start breaking the Mount Pleasant press in the first couple minutes, the Demons started to settle in offensively and kept the game close. Josie Tanner hit three first quarter triples to trail just 17-10 after one and Anna Nacos was big in keeping it a six point game at half with 10 points at the break. Late in the third Mount Pleasant’s Andrea Lopreato started to heat up and stretched the lead out to 17 after the quarter and they never looked back from there. Lopreato finished with a game-high 25 points. Nacos led the Demons with 20 points and all of Tanner’s 12 points came from behind the arc. ....
