Australia slams its borders shut with India leaving 9,000 expats stranded


As many as 9,000 Australians - including the country s top cricket players - have been stranded in India by the government s ban on flights from the Covid-ravaged nation until May 15.
Prime Minster Scott Morrison suspended all direct commercial flights and chartered repatriation flights on Tuesday afternoon as India suffers a huge surge in cases and deaths.  
He said eight planned chartered flights to the Northern Territory will be delayed until after mid-May and commercial flights may remain banned beyond then.
Stranded Aussies will not even be able to book flights via a third country, with major air hubs Singapore, Malaysia and Qatar also banning travel. ....

'Fighting Covid-19 requires empathy and cooperation' | India News


Narrating his ordeal, Karachi-based trade unionist Karamat Ali revealed how he was not able to reach out to his ailing wife in New Delhi due to visa restrictions.
Ali said his wife was visiting New Delhi and was down with Covid-19 infection, but visa restrictions did not allow him to visit her.
“I want to go to the Wagah border and take a tank of oxygen to my wife, but I can’t,” said Ali, his voice choking.
He said he wanted to also take a defibrillator and whatever medical supplies he could carry.
Many such stories of personal loss were shared during the event. ....
