Each year during Black History Month, which has been designated to take place during February, communities gather to celebrate Black history and culture, as well as host community events that further the conversation surrounding race, racial justice and the importance of Black history.

But eight new banners that were placed in January are unique to the district, and maybe unlike any banner that people have seen before.
The banners are made of aluminum items donated by the community. The district s visitors will be able to identify cupcake pans, piping and machinery pieces in the banners.
The sculptural banners were created by Michael Bradley and Larry Peters, two longtime Topeka artists who work in ceramics and mixed media. Bradley rents studio space at Studio 831, and Peters, who is married to Barbara Waterman-Peters, occasionally uses the space to show his work.  ....
