In what Variety labeled an Oscar diversity record, nine actors of color were nominated this year for Academy Awards.
The milestone presented a hopeful contrast to 2016, when all 20 acting nominees were white, a situation that sparked the critical social media hashtag #OscarsSoWhite.
But Dr. Frederick W. Gooding Jr., an author and professor at Texas Christian University, cautions that achieving meaningful diversity in the acting categories may have more to do with the quality of roles than with the quantity of nominations. 
What does it tell us if the Black women winning Academy Awards 70 years apart are still playing maids? he asked, citing the Oscar-recognized performances of Hattie McDaniel in Gone With the Wind (1939) and Octavia Spencer in The Help (2011). ....

Topeka schools and organizations are hosting events during Black History Month.


Each year during Black History Month, which has been designated to take place during February, communities gather to celebrate Black history and culture, as well as host community events that further the conversation surrounding race, racial justice and the importance of Black history. 
This year, in the midst of ongoing racial tensions, supporting Black community members seems more important than ever. Here is a list of events and conversations taking place in Topeka during Black History Month.

Ben Montgomery and Frederick Gooding will take part in virtual talks at the Topeka library.


The Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library will host two authors who wrote books that share insight into Black history and racial justice. The free events will take place in accordance with Black History Month and the library s goal of continuing conversations surrounding racial issues. 
Ben Montgomery, author of four books including the New York Times bestseller Grandma Gatewood s Walk, will host a discussion at 7 p.m. Jan. 28 about his new book, A Shot in the Moonlight: How a Freed Slave and a Confederate Soldier Fought for Justice in the Jim Crow South.
A second virtual event will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 with author Frederick Gooding, who wrote Black Oscars: From Mammy to Minny, What the Academy Awards Tell Us About African Americans. ....
