Convicted child molester Eric D. Sims was abused as a child, emotionally and sexually, his mother said at his 1992 sentencing hearing in Shawnee County District Court.
Sims was sexually molested by his grandfather, who slept in the same bed with him for 14 years because of a lack of space in their home, said Montoy Sims, who would die at age 75 in 2008. Sims father had been emotionally abusive to him, she added. ....

A Wichita health club company with an operation in Hutchinson was ordered to pay $15,000 for violating the No-Call Act, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said Friday.
Genesis Health Clubs Management Inc. agreed to a consent judgment ordering it to pay the $15,000 for No Call investigative fees.
The attorney general’s Consumer Protection Division began investigating Genesis after receiving complaints from Kansas consumers about receiving unsolicited telemarketing calls. The complaints alleged that company employees were calling Kansas consumers on the Do-Not-Call registry.
The judgment was approved Thursday by Judge Mary Christopher in Shawnee County District Court. ....

Woman arrested on marijuana distribution count 3 days after turning 18

Topeka police arrested a woman in connection with crimes that included marijuana distribution and methamphetamine possession on Thursday, three days after her 18th birthday.
Taken into custody was Amythest Mae Jordan Whitmarsh, who turned 18 on Monday, according to Shawnee County Jail records. Her age enables Whitmarsh to be prosecuted as an adult under Kansas statute.
Gretchen Spiker, public relations specialist for the Topeka Police Department, said officers about 2:30 p.m. Thursday were trying to locate 40-year-old Justin Leroy Jordan, who was wanted on an outstanding warrant, when they saw him get into a car Whitmarsh was driving in the 200 block of S.E. 7th. ....
