NAS Honors Indian American Scientists Nikhil Srivastava, Meenakshi Wadhwa with Special Prize and Medal

Among the recipients were Nikhil Srivastava and Meenakshi Wadhwa.
Srivastava, of U.C. Berkeley, as well as Adam Marcus and Daniel Alan Spielman of Yale, were named recipients of the Michael and Sheila Held Prize.
Marcus, Spielman and Srivastava solved longstanding questions on the Kadison-Singer problem and on Ramanujan graphs, and in the process uncovered a deep new connection between linear algebra, geometry of polynomials, and graph theory that has inspired the next generation of theoretical computer scientists, according to the NAS.Â
Their groundbreaking papers on these questions, both published in 2015, solved problems that mathematicians had been working on for several decades. In particular, their solution to the Kadison-Singer problem, first posited in 1959, has been hailed as one of the most important developments in mathematics of the past decade, it said. ....

Indian mathematician Nikhil Srivastava, has been named winner of the prestigious 2021 Michael and Sheila Held Prize along with two others for solving long-standing questions on the Kadison–Singer problem and on Ramanujan graphs. WASHINGTON The National Academy of Sciences will honor 20 individuals with awards in recognition of their extraordinary scientific achievements in a wide range of fields spanning the physical, biological, social, and medical sciences.
Dana Longcope, Montana State University, will receive the Arctowski Medal for fundamental research on the nature of solar magnetism, magnetic topology, and reconnection. The medal is presented with a $100,000 prize, and $100,000 to support research in solar physics and solar terrestrial relationships.
Patrick Keeling, University of British Columbia, will receive the Gilbert Morgan Smith Medal for excellence in published research on marine and freshwater algae. The medal is presented with $50,000 prize. ....
