SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris has chosen DeAndre Brown, executive director of nonprofit organization LifeLine to Success, as the acting executive director of the Shelby County Office of Reentry.
Brown, who spent nearly two years in prison, founded the nonprofit in 2009 with his wife to help ex-offenders reenter society. Brown’s own criminal history had blocked him from becoming a volunteer chaplain at a local hospital. That experience fueled his commitment to help other e ....

Shelby County wedding locations: New venue planned near Collierville

Couples could soon have a new place to tie the knot near Collierville.
Greg McOlgan and Shannon McOlgan submitted a Special Use Permit Application to the Memphis and Shelby County Office of Planning and Development that would allow for a wedding venue and events center in unincorporated Shelby County near Collierville.
The Virgie Mae Manor Weddings and Events venue would be on about 27 acres on the west side of Collierville-Arlington Road, north of Wolf River, on former farmland.
According to the application, the event center would also be in Collierville s growth boundary known as the Collierville Reserve Area.
The venue plans in the application include approximately 6,000 to 7,000 square feet for the main building with a bridal cottage, small wedding chapel, pavilion and walking trails. ....

"Pop-Up Pods" Part of City Strategy to "Normalize" Vaccinations

With a goal of vaccinating up to 34,000 people per week for at least the next four weeks, the City of Memphis is working on a closer-to-home vaccine delivery strategy.
Thrice-weekly Pop-Up Pods, or temporary vaccination sites, will come to areas where demographic and zip code data show a need for more doses.
“We will work with partners who have come forward saying they will host a pod,” said City of Memphis Chief Operating Officer Doug McGowen, adding that it’s one of several ways to speed up “normalization” of the distribution process. ....
