Today In Johnson City History: May 15


May 15, 1868: The East Tennessee Union Flag reported, “We have now had nearly a month of incessant rain and “still it rains.’ We fear many of our farmers will be late in getting in their crops.”
The East Tennessee Union Flag was a newspaper published in Jonesborough, which was spelled that way at the time.
May 15, 1901: The Knoxville Sentinel, with a dateline from Johnson City, reported,
“The Banking & Trust company (sic) of the city will reorganize June 4, and will be known after that date as the Unaka National bank (sic) with a capital of $50,000. The application to organize as a national bank has been approved by the comptroller of the currency. The same officers will be in charge of the bank: John D. Cox, president; S.C. Williams, vice-president; Tate L. Earnest, cashier.” ....

Remembering the Amazing Shreveport Artist Ron Rice
Just as a bit of clarification before we get in to the story of this amazing local artist, I (Rueben Wright) had only just recently heard of Ron Rice. My mother is an avid garage and estate sale patron, and from time-to-time she finds something for me like old records or weird art. Last year, I was gifted one-such item at Christmas. It was a bordered drawing of an oafish-looking man shooting the screen out of his television (seen above), and I immediately loved it.
After having it around my home for a short while, I noticed that was a cartoon drawn by Ron Rice that may have been published in the Shreveport Journal, a famous publication in Shreveport from the 1800 s all the way until 1991. That s when I began learning all I could about Rice. ....

While at Syracuse he helped form a local chapter of the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE) and actively fought housing segregation in the school dorms and surrounding community. In 1963, just before taking his oral exams for his PhD, he dropped out and went to work for CORE In Louisiana. Michael stayed with CORE for four years, eventually becoming the Mid-West Regional Field Secretary. He was jailed 11 times, the last time for three weeks under a charge of criminal anarchy, a capital offense. He left CORE when the white staff were asked to leave and moved to San Francisco during the summer of love. ....
