Vinh Le grew up in Vietnam, in a small town called Kinh Bac an hour or so north of Hanoi. Geographically, it is about as far away from Cambridge as you can get. Spiritually, though? “It’s one of the oldest towns in Vietnam. It’s also very funky and weird,” he says.
That kinship is part of what makes Cambridge a natural home for Cicada Coffee Bar, the new restaurant and cafe Le opened with life and business partner Duong Huynh at the end of February. Both are trained as architects: They met when she interned at his firm in Vietnam, and he joined her in the United States in 2013 — cooking at Ming Tsai’s Blue Dragon, getting a master’s in architecture an ....

After a long, hard winter and fall (and
year) for restaurants, the sure signs of spring are beginning to appear: new openings, along with post-hibernation reopenings, and retooling at places long on the scene. (Uni has a taco truck! Café du Pays is now Vincent’s!) We are still in the middle of a pandemic, and masks, vaccines, fresh air, and small, careful in-group gatherings remain the order of the day. But it feels hopeful. This weekend: New restaurants, a birthday dinner, and other food events


It’s been a banner week for new coffee shops, first with the debut of Glasser Coffee Co. in Brighton, and now with the opening of Cicada Coffee Bar in Cambridge’s Central Square. The Vietnamese coffee shop, which launched Friday morning, is fueled by Vietnamese women-owned roasters: Nguyen Coffee Supply in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Càphê Roasters in Philadelphia, Penn. The menu includes cappuccinos, coconut affogatos, and the Cicada Latte, but the honey mousse espresso, or cà phê trứng, looks particularly delightful. It’s traditionally prepared with egg yolks, condensed milk, coffee, and, in Cicada’s case, local knotweed honey instead of sugar. To eat, the cafe also has a variety of bánh mì sandwiches and pho salads, plus pastries from Butternut Bakery in Arlington. Orders can be placed for pickup here. ....

Cicada Coffee Bar brings piece of Vietnam to Cambridge

A hike in Vermont last summer brought Vinh Le back to summers in Vietnam as a child. Listening to the sound of chirping cicadas reminded him of the simple pleasures of picking mango and walking around with friends in his home province of Bac Ninh. 
Determined to bring this same feeling of joy and happiness to his neighborhood in Cambridge, Le rented a space on Prospect Street to open a coffee bar with his wife Duong Huynh. He drew inspiration from the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese monk. 
“He’s a mastermind of living in the moment,” said Le. “His theory is very simple. When you eat, you need to make sure you are eating. When you sit, you sit right here to enjoy the moment. When you walk, you need to make sure you are walking.”  ....
