Notebook: Hilliard Bradley Jaguars boys volleyball team enjoys whirlwind day
The seniors on the Hilliard Bradley boys volleyball team had an unforgettable day May 28.
The second-seeded Jaguars defeated seventh-seeded Dublin Jerome 25-20, 25-18, 25-21 in a Division I, East Region final at 5 p.m. that Friday to qualify for state for the first time since 2012. After the victory, they were shuttled to another milestone, high school graduation at 7 p.m. in Ohio State’s Schottenstein Center.
Senior outside hitter Jonah Gilbert had 37 kills in the match, which took approximately 70 minutes to play. Gilbert was pleased with the outcome but wanted to get to graduation.

The bumps in the road that Aidan Kenley has experienced the past three years are what he considers part of the process of bigger things to come.
The Olentangy Liberty senior received an offer to play men’s lacrosse at Ohio State as an eighth-grader and backed it up by becoming a first-team all-league honoree and tallying 36 goals and 13 assists as a freshman.
Since that time, though, the future Buckeye has run into one obstacle after another in the sport.
After helping the Liberty football team reach its third consecutive Division I state semifinal in 2018, Kenley suffered a torn labrum that kept him from playing his sophomore season for the lacrosse team.

UPDATE: This game has now been postponed. The Athletic’s Brian Bennett tells the story of Carlik Jones finally being recruited at a high-level after being passed over by nearly every D-I program (including Chris Mack and Xavier) when he was coming out of high school.
Growing up, Jones had gone to Mack’s camps when Mack was the coach at Xavier. Mack was aware of him but never strongly considered recruiting him. The Musketeers had four-star guards such as Quintin Goodin and Edmond Sumner in the pipeline. In the spring of 2020, though, Mack put on the full-court press for Jones, who heard from more than 50 programs after he entered the transfer portal. It turns out that Mack’s parents and Jones’ family live less than three miles from each other on the far north side of Cincinnati. Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling recently announced the 2021 junior high and elementary state tournaments, along with Area tournaments, have been canceled because of the ongoing pandemic.
The junior high tournament was scheduled for March 6-7 at Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown.
The elementary tournament was scheduled March 27-28 at Pitt’s Petersen Events Center.
After those tournaments were canceled, an alternative tournament was announced. It will be April 2-3 at Monroeville Convention Center.
