Artsday / Women to shine in music festival

“CANBERRA Women In Music” is a new three-day festival with a line-up of 11 bands across three venues showcasing the music, event management and technical skills of women in Canberra, with all proceeds going to charity. First up, and to launch the project is “She’s On The Bill”, young professionals Sophie Edwards, Kirrah Amosa, Lucy Sugerman, Kim Yang and Dana Hassall, 7-11pm, Friday, March 12 at ANU Kambri.
THEN on Saturday, March 13, 11 local acts will perform at The Polo, 38 David Street, Turner, from midday until midnight in three shows for three charities. The night time show, “Women Who Rock For Karinya House” starts at 8.30pm with MC Jen Seyderhelm. The festival also has “Soulful Sunday” at Sideway on Sunday, March 14. All details here. ....

Concert review: Augustin Hadelich (violin) Danish National Symphony Orchestra/Manfred Honeck

It takes a lot more fortitude to pull off the Sibelius Violin Concerto in concert than on record. I admired Augustin Hadelich’s 2014 recording for its detail, cleanliness of tone and cool emotional insight. His performance in Copenhagen with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra was similarly prepared – scrupulous in its following of the composer’s tempo markings – but lacked the power and lyricism needed at climactic moments.
Unperturbed by a consistent whining noise that invaded the DR Concert Hall, Hadelich found an intriguing way to convey a sense of building stamina in the slow movement, using articulation rather than heft and volume. For once, the piece was taken at a true Adagio di molto by conductor Manfred Honeck. That sort of narrative articulation was a little less forthcoming in the finale, on which Hadelich couldn’t quite stamp his authority. ....

Camilla Wicks, dazzling violinist from a young age, dies at 92
Camilla Wicks in her Hollywood Bowl debut in 1946. Wicks, who was a child prodigy who developed into a significant soloist at a time when violin virtuosos were mainly men, died on Nov. 25, 2020, in Weston, Fla. She was 92. Via Wicks family via The New York Times.
