Coldwater Planning Commission to consider animal amendment

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A public hearing on a Zoning Text Amendment to regulate non-household Animals within the City’s residential areas is on the agenda for Monday’s City of Coldwater Planning Commission meeting.
City Planner Dean Walrack says in his report that the proposed changes will add two new definitions to a section of the zoning ordinance covering Farm Animals and Hobby Animals.
According to Walrack, “This change will enable a limited number of Hobby Animals such as chickens and rabbits on residential properties, including residential uses within commercial or industrial districts. The draft as written will also allow up to two bee hives on these residential properties. The enclosures required for the keeping of these Hobby Animals will be subject to 15 foot setbacks from all side and rear property lines intended to protect adjacent properties from ....

Councilmember Nancy Navarro (District 4) also sponsored Bill 44-20, which passed and will require the Office of Legislative Oversight (OLO) to submit a racial equity and social justice impact statement for each Zoning Text Amendment (ZTA), a requirement that is already in place for bills. OLO expects the bill to help diminish racial and social inequities because such analysis may help mitigate further unintended consequences of zoning. A ZTA involves a change in the text of the zoning ordinance of the Montgomery County code. The Council may amend the text of the Ordinance to create new zones or delete existing ones, or more frequently to change standards governing the development and uses allowed in particular zones. ....

The Lee County Planning Commission will have a Public Hearing on Wednesday, December 16, 2020 at 5pm inside the General District Courtroom at the Lee County Courthouse in Jonesville.
