'Heartbreaking' - museum closed by vandals after pain of Covid

A POPULAR Worcestershire museum has been forced to close the day after it reopened for the first time in months following a 'heartbreaking' attack by vandals.
The Avoncroft Museum, which is run by a charity, is closed today because of the overnight attacks which left broken glass strewn across the attraction in Stoke Heath, near Bromsgrove. Yesterday was the first time the museum had opened since last November because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Now it is closed again because of the attack.
The damage is expected to run into thousands of pounds but the community has rallied behind staff and volunteers at the museum, some even turning up with brooms. Their help, while very warmly welcomed, is not needed at the moment as staff are still waiting for the forensics team to carry out their investigations in the hope they can identify the culprits.

Early reopening for Avoncroft Museum

Avoncroft Museum, Bromsgrove.
AVONCROFT Museum in Bromsgrove will be reopening to the public sooner than expected to mark the early May bank holiday weekend.
The museum grounds will be open from May 1 every weekend 10am to 5pm and tickets must be purchased in advance.
Avoncroft’s buildings will be closed but staff are hoping the 19 acres of outdoor space will entice visitors to come and explore.
Staff and trustees of the museum have decided to mark May Day bank holiday by reopening the museum grounds to the public.
Director of Avoncroft Museum, Zoe Willems, said: “We have a very small staff team at the moment, and a positive army of volunteers and supporters who are helping us to get ready to open to the public. We think it’s more important to be open than to be perfect, so we hope visitors will come and enjoy the 19 acres of open space and understand that we are still a work in progress in some areas. As a further thank you to everyone for their support during these difficult times, we’ll only be charging £5 per ticket until the late May bank holiday.”

Museum in Bromsgrove awarded COVID grant

A museum in Bromsgrove has been awarded funds allowing it to reopen in the summer.
Avoncroft Museum has been granted £92,000 in the second round of the Government and Arts Council England’s Culture Recovery Fund.
The investment will allow the museum to pay for some urgent repairs and open its doors to the public in the early summer.
The attraction, which opened in 1967, usually relies on public admissions and donations to cover conservation and staff costs, along with profits from the tearoom and shop.
Michael Woolley, chair of Trustees at Avoncroft Museum, said: “After a very difficult twelve months because of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is very exciting news that the museum has been awarded a further grant of £92, 000 from the Culture Recovery Fund. This will make a major contribution towards being able to re-open the museum safely when Government restrictions allow and to undertake some of the repairs to the buildings necessitated by the museum being closed for such a long time. The future is looking much brighter today as a result of this grant.”
