Close Shave: Muslim Inmate Asks 10th Circuit to Revive Religious Discrimination Lawsuit

(CN) A Muslim man forced to shave his beard during intake by a Colorado corrections officer asked the 10
th Circuit on Friday to overturn a lower court’s granting of qualified immunity to revive the case.
During intake in 2016 for a 90-day prison sentence for parole violations, Colorado Department of Corrections Sergeant Thomas Currington ordered Tajuddin Ashaheed to shave his beard. When Ashaheed asked to keep his beard as a follower of the Sunnha practice under the Islam faith, Currington said the prison’s religious exception only applied to full beards and threatened to throw him into solitary confinement if he didn’t shave. ....

Could the redrawing of Utah's district maps begin sooner than first thought?

TAYLORSVILLE The chair of the Utah Independent Redistricting Commission said Tuesday that it s possible the commission could start designing its first drafts of state voting maps in August, which would be a month earlier than what was originally expected based on 2020 Census delays.
If so, it has nothing to do with new data released by the Census Bureau Monday and everything to do with what the Census Bureau announced last month. Agency officials said on March 15 it is expected to release legacy format data in mid-to-late August, which is raw data not compiled into simpler tables and tools for states using the information to create voting boundaries. ....

(CN) A conservative think tank on Thursday asked a 10
th Circuit panel to revive its claim against a city’s requirement that donors contributing over $250 to ballot measure campaigns must be disclosed.
As a super-sized debate bubbled up around a proposed soda tax in 2017, Albuquerque-based Rio Grande Foundation sued the city of Santa Fe over an ordinance requiring donor disclosure by groups spending more than $250 to advocate for ballot measures.
With proponents of the proposed 2-cent-per ounce tax on sugary beverages backed by billionaire Mike Bloomberg, groups on both sides spent nearly $2 million. Ultimately voters rejected the measure by more than 15 points. ....
