SNP candidate wins endorsement from two SIC councillors

SNP candidate Tom Wills’ election campaign has received a late boost in the form of an endorsement from former independent candidate Ryan Thomson.
Thomson, who is chairman of Shetland Islands Council’s environment and transport committee, won 1,286 votes in the August 2019 by-election.
That equated to a share of nearly 11 per cent in a contest won by a margin of just over 15 per cent by Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart, with the destiny of those votes likely to be a significant factor in determining the outcome this time around.

In a social media post on Tuesday, Thomson said he would be voting this Thursday “in a different way to what I have before”.

Use your second vote wisely

Our Scottish electoral system means that on the regional ballot, a vote for the Scottish Greens is likely to be about five times more effective than a vote for the SNP. It’s not surprising that political parties want to win as much support as possible but before casting your...

Scotland votes on reintroducing wolves as world's first 'Rewilding Nation'

Scotland votes on reintroducing wolves as world's first 'Rewilding Nation'

Wolves and other apex predators could soon return to the Scottish highlands, as part of the world's most ambitious rewilding project.
The Scottish Rewilding Alliance (SWA), which is formed of over 20 conservation groups, has called on the Scottish government to support a project that would set aside a third of public land for nature.
This return of public land is one of five environmental pledges that have been proposed by the SWA. Alongside re-introduction of 'keystone' species and marine reserves, it has been called the most ambitious project of its kind. The pledges have caught both the imagination of Scottish naturalists and politicians.

Nicola Sturgeon's Quest for Scottish Independence

Save this story for later.
On a sharp morning on the southern edge of Glasgow, Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister of Scotland and the leader of the Scottish National Party, arrived at a dentist’s office for a photo opportunity. Scotland has had its own government since the late nineties, when certain powers were devolved to the country, almost three hundred years after it formed a political union with England. The S.N.P., which has run Scotland since 2007, wants the country to secede from the United Kingdom altogether. On May 6th, Scottish voters will decide whether to reëlect the Party and back Sturgeon’s demand for the second independence referendum in a decade, which polls suggest that she might win. The previous day, announcing her party’s election manifesto, Sturgeon had promised to abolish the dentistry fees charged by the Scottish National Health Service. This was a typical S.N.P. policy: populist yet incremental, hinting at the broader, egalitarian future that awaits the country once it is fully free. The photo opportunity, at a clinic in the suburb of Thornliebank, involved the First Minister dangling some dental tools into the mouth of a child-size cuddly green dinosaur.

Campaign round-up 3 May 2021

SCOTTISH Labour has unveiled a Highlands and Islands manifesto which includes a promise to invest in Scotland’s ferry fleet and devolve more powers from Edinburgh to local communities.
Party leader Anas Sarwar said: “For many communities in the Highlands and Islands the pandemic exposed the challenges they have long faced.

“From poor digital connectivity to isolation to barriers in healthcare access, the difficulties posed by the pandemic are by no means new to communities in the Highlands and Islands.
“The Highlands and Islands cannot afford another five years of bickering about the same old arguments. The next parliament needs to be focused on rebuilding your economy and your communities after Covid.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has been the single biggest crisis facing the world in our lifetimes.
The way Nicola Sturgeon has handled the situation, with clarity, compassion dignity and dogged determination has been an example to us all.
Once again we have seen the benefits of decisions that affect Scotland being taken in Scotland.

Partition of the UK will end our 'free to all' NHS

Copied!
I was born into the first generation to benefit from a National Health Service with the core principles that it meets the needs of everyone, and is free to all at the point of delivery. NHS Scotland is funded by the Scottish Government out of the block grant it gets as being part of the United Kingdom.

I’m not surprised that the SNP are skirting around the details of their desired partition of the UK (aka ‘independence’). If the SNP and the other partitionist parties, Alba and the Greens, eventually get their way there will be no UK block grant to fund those NHS core principles.

Independence not top of his priorities, as 'it's coming anyway', says SNP candidate Wills

http://shet.news/ekcah

“WE’VE GOT new young members who are really active, so it feels very different this time around,” says second-time SNP candidate Tom Wills when asked to assess the party’s chances of ending a Liberal hegemony that has lasted since the Scottish Parliament’s foundation.
In the August 2019 by-election to replace Liberal Democrat MSP Tavish Scott, who had held the Shetland seat for 20 years, Wills came a creditable second with 32 per cent of the vote. But to go one better this time around requires overturning a margin of nearly 2,000 votes that separated him and Scott’s successor Beatrice Wishart.
