Record Breaking Boat, Record Breaking Team


When Michael Walsh, Phil Barnett and Neil Paton teamed in the 18ft Skiff Prudential and won the 1989 JJ Giltinan World Championship on Sydney Harbour, they equalled the 1981 record set by the legendary Color 7 team of Iain Murray, Andrew Buckland and Don Buckley.
The Prudential team won all seven races of the championship, with margins ranging from 1m40s to 7m, in a boat which had previously won the prestigious event at Perth, WA in 1987.
This achievement, however, is just part of an intriguing story of boat and skipper.
In 1987, 18ft skiff administrators decided to take the JJ Giltinan world Championship to Perth, Western Australia and the regatta was sailed on the Swan River prior to Australia s defence of The America s Cup. ....

Abbotsford 12 Skiff Sailing Club hosted the 85th running of the Australian 12 Skiff Championship over the recent Easter weekend. 17 skiffs entered the series with Nick Press & Andrew (Noddy) Hay, sailing Sail INc. finishing clear winners, taking 5 firsts & a second from the 6 races.
Sail Inc always found an extra turn of speed when needed, their exceptional crew work & the development they have done with Steve Jackson, sailmaker from Sail Inc continues to produce the goods. While the result was a clear points win the racing was close with hard fought finishes among the top half of the fleet. Boat handling being clearly rewarded on the tight river courses. ....

Bob Holmes, a truly great champion


The recent death of Robert Joseph (Bob) Holmes was the passing of one of the truly great Australian 18ft Skiff champions. Bob was five times JJ Giltinan world champion and five times Australian champion, and won many other state and club championships over a ten year career in the class. He was also the first Australian skipper to win more than one JJ Giltinan world Championship.
After competing for several seasons in the 16 footers, at the Middle Harbour club, Bob joined the 18ft skiff ranks in the 1964-1965 season and immediately had success when he won both the 1964-1965 NSW and Australian Championships, on Sydney Harbour, as well as the 1965 JJ Giltinan world Championship, in Auckland NZ, with his team of Hugh Cooke, Bob Sheridan and Bob Hagley. ....
