McCloud Fire Department disappointed that ZIB contract wasn t approved Shareen Strauss Mt. Shasta Area Newspapers The McCloud Community Services District voted 3 to 2 last week against a $30,000 contract from ZIB (Zone of Increased Benefits) for the McCloud Fire Department. The contract was for the volunteer fire department in McCloud to respond to the greater McCloud area, which includes Squaw Valley Road, Mt Shasta Forest, and Wilderness Estates subdivisions, which the fire department already does cover. All fire departments in California already participate in the Mutual Aid Agreement where different fire agencies will come to the aid in other areas if needed. ....

The province has confirmed it s in the process of changing the name of Squaw Valley Road, due to its derogatory meaning. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure wouldn t confirm who put forward the request to change the name of the road, only that concerns were brought forward and it took the matter very seriously. North Okanagan Regional District Area D director Rick Fairbairn said he wasn t aware of how the potential name change had come about, but he d been contacted by the Ministry regarding the matter. ....

Yavapai County deputies say 21-year-old Miguel Orozco drove up and down Squaw Valley Road with the teen on top of his car on Monday. Officials say the teen slid off the hood and was hit by the car. Orozco told police he was driving 25 to 30 miles per hour at the time. ....
