Scituate Historical Society receives Mass Cultural Council grant COURTESY OF THE SCITUATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY The Scituate Historical Society announced that it has received a grant of $2,500 from the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency, through the Council’s Projects Program. Being named a recipient of a Mass Cultural Council grant is an honor, acknowledging that the Scituate Historical Society provides significant public value through its programs and services. A couple of years ago, the Society celebrated its 100th birthday. Over that time, its goal has been to provide an assortment of opportunities for individuals and families to learn about the remarkable people and events that shaped Scituate and the South Shore. These opportunities include the care and interpretation of 13 historic sites, including the Maritime and Irish Mossing Museum. The Society oversees a research and genealogical library and collections archives that serves the community and researchers nationwide. In addition, the Society runs lecture series and special town events, provides extensive field trips and programs for hundreds of school children each year.

Itâs a supermoon because itâs a full moon that is especially large, due to its close proximity to the earth on its elliptical orbit. This supermoon, one of two on the calendar for 2021, is called a Pink Moon, getting its name from the creeping phlox, a pink springtime flower. The moon rose over Graves Light Station in Winthrop on Monday evening.
SAA announces 2021 Annual Juried Show award winners COURTESY OF THE SCITUATE ARTS ASSOCIATION The Scituate Arts Association announced 21 award winners at the SAA’s Annual Juried Show. This year’s awards are being shared on the SAA and Gallery websites at https://scituateartsassociation.com and https://frontstreetartgallery.com, respectively, as large gatherings are still not an option due to COVID-19. On April 7, awards totaling over $1,000 were selected. The prizes were made possible by the event’s three business supporters: Janet Cornacchio and Jack Conway, of Scituate, and Coastal Heritage Bank and Frame Center, of Hanover. The accepted works and award winners were chosen by jurors Michelle Clarke, a Hanover artist and Best in Show winner at the SAA's 2019 Juried Show; Nan Daly, whose memories of growing up along the Hudson and in the Catskills of New York provide much of the imagery of her abstract paintings; and Margaret McWethy, who is an impressionist painter with a lifelong interest in art and the natural world.

Goodbye Betty Foster stepped down as the longtime Town Archivist after 22 years. “There are so many fascinating things to discover in the archives,” she said. “Scituate has one of the most complete sets of records from Plymouth Colony. I have vital records that go back to the 1600s. I truly enjoyed finding obscure things about the town that I didn’t know, and I truly loved the people I met. I met wonderful people.”
