GAZETTE COVERAGE
Imagine being a reporter assigned to cover the event, and you’re there with your pencil and pad ready to take notes when the two scientists meet in New Brunswick, New Jersey at RCA headquarters, about 40 miles outside New York. As they rush to greet each other, both wearing broad smiles, you’re hoping to catch every word of the conversation only to be hugely disappointed. The two great minds are speaking in German.
That’s how one newspaper reported the historical meeting, and if you’re a Steinmetz fan it’s one of many stories that make the man so endearing. The famous Einstein meets Steinmetz photograph from 100 years ago this week commemorates the meeting of the two men and others, and while you may have seen an image with just Steinmetz and Einstein pictured, that photo was the creation of the GE publ ....

During an hour-long presentation before the City Council last week, Golub suggested that Schenectady Metro better represents current-day Schenectady and its accomplishments of the past three decades. ....

Walter Johnson, one of the greatest pitchers of all time, had one of his greatest seasons in 1913, going 36-7.
But that fall, the Mohawk Colored Giants, a Black baseball team in Schenectady, added an unofficial loss to Johnson’s tally when he and an all-white team of major leaguers came to the city as part of a barnstorming tour.
Facing Johnson was Giants’ pitcher Frank Wickware, who possessed “one of the fastest fastballs of the era,” according to Steven Rice, a member of the Society for American Baseball Research.
Wickware was so confident that he would frequently belittle his opponents’ efforts by calling in his outfielders, reported a 1961 Schenectady Gazette article, “and there is no record that this bit of show-boating ever backfired.” ....
