Construction on a long-awaited new boat ramp at Midge Point will begin in June and be complete in October, weather permitting.
Mackay MP Julieanne Gilbert said Queensland company Australian Marine and Civil was awarded the $1.55m contract to complete the works for the new boat ramp at Jimmy’s Rocks Road.
“The contract includes construction of a new two-lane boat ramp and 120-metre-long access causeway at Jimmy’s Rocks Road,” Mrs Gilbert said.
“The design of the new facility accounts for the local marine habitat, large tidal range and wave conditions of the Midge Point area.” ....

A popular Mackay region tourist destination may soon have another claim to fame with more turtles, dugongs and dolphins being sighted thanks to six years of being net-free.
Cape Hillsborough National Tourist Park owner Ben Atherton said the zone created a “rounded experience” for visitors together with the wallabies, beaches and walking trails.
“Mum and dad can fish in the area, kids can fish in the area. It’s not just about people catching more fish, it’s about everyone getting one,” Mr Atherton said.
And not only has the legal fishing rate risen from 32 per cent in 2015 to 73.2 per cent in 2020, the size of the fish is bigger too. ....

Proposed changes to fees at two Mackay camping grounds aim to secure a larger slice of an annual $10 billion tourism market.
Mackay Regional Council will meet on Wednesday to decide whether to slash the charges at both its St Helens Beach and Ball Bay sites in a bid to attract more campers.
If the recommendation is approved, the fees at both sites would drop 44 per cent from $27 daily and $156 weekly to $15 and $87, respectively.
Council documents stated the amendments were based on site assessments, stakeholder discussions, visitor feedback, trend analysis and comparing fees at other Queensland councils’ campsites. ....
