Not 'sensible' to accelerate easing of local Covid restrictions just yet, first minister says

SHETLAND should not expect to have any Covid restrictions eased ahead of the next scheduled change in a fortnight despite the very low prevalence of the virus in the isles, according to first minister Nicola Sturgeon.
However, she suggested that some parts of the easing planned for early June could be brought forward.

On 17 May it is expected that all of Scotland will move from level three to level two, which will include indoor household visits in limited numbers and expanded hospitality.
But with Shetland having no cases for weeks and one of the highest vaccination rates in Scotland, there is clamour from some to have restrictions eased quicker than the rest of the country.

EDINBURGH: Scotland “cannot wait until next year, or the year after” for independence, Alex Salmond said as Nicola Sturgeon indicated she will not support his push for another referendum.
Speaking BBC Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday, the Scottish First Minister said her “immediate focus” if re-elected next week will be on coronavirus, adding those who are “serious about independence” know the country should navigate the pandemic first, while also building support for leaving the UK among undecided voters.
Salmond, the Alba Party leader and Sturgeon’s predecessor as SNP leader, said the comments highlight a difference in approach between the two parties.

Biologists Describe Catching 100-year-old 'Monster' Fish From Detroit River

A sturgeon nearly seven feet long and believed to be more than a century old got three biologists working hard when they caught it during an annual study of the species.
The team from the Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation office needed nearly six minutes to haul the 240-pound fish into the boat from the Detroit River, near Grosse Ile.
"I felt the fish thumping on the line. As it got closer, it just got bigger and bigger," one of the biologists, Jason Fischer, said, according to The Associated Press.
