Unsung D-Day hero opens Norfolk RAF memorial


From North Creake, No 199 and No 171 Squadrons of No 100 Group of RAF Bomber Command flew Stirling IIIs and Halifax IIIs on radio counter-measures intended to conceal the true position of the main Allied bomber thrust.
They used airborne radio transmitters called Mandrel to jam German early-warning radar and dropped aluminium strips, known as Window to give false radar readings.

James ‘Jim’ Hocking
James ‘Jim’ Hocking was born in Nambour as the second child of William and Eva Hocking’s five children. When war was declared in 1939, three Hocking boys were ready to sign up. As soon as Jim turned 18, he enlisted with the Citizens Military Forces before being discharged after four months to take up acceptance in the Royal Australian Air Force in 1942.
He was sent to England to train on the heavy bombers of the RAF during World War Two. On July 28, 1944, the 21-year-old RAAF pilot was flying a Stirling Bomber or “flying coffin” during a final training run before heading into battle. ....

Nelson pilot's VC for bravery in doomed bombing raid on display

Group Captain Leonard Henry Trent whose Victoria Cross is on display in the RNZAF Museum in Christchurch this month.
A Victoria Cross awarded to Nelson-born Squadron Leader (and later Group Captain) Leonard Henry Trent VC DFC (RAF 36146) is on public display for the first time.
It’s the only VC in the RNZAF Museum of New Zealand collection at Wigram, Christchurch. The precious medal, which will be on display until May 9, was donated to the museum along with Trent’s nine other medals by his family after his death in 1986.
A quiet and unassuming man, Trent disliked the fuss that the award caused and remained uncomfortable with the publicity and his renown as a war hero, always stressing the vital contribution of his aircrew and making a point of quietly visiting the families of those who gave their lives. ....
