2021 elections: Hackney by-election results

The battle in Stamford Hill saw the Tories’ Mr Lisser secure 1,456 votes, against Sales’ 1,192. Turnout in the ward was the highest of the four by-elections at 46 per cent, with 2,943 votes cast in total. Johnny Dixon for the Greens came third with 189 votes, while the Lib Dem’s Anthony Harms came last with 59.
Mr Lisser did not attend the count, where there was a brief battle of wills between Conservative councillor Simche Steinberger, who attempted to accept the vote on Mr Lisser’s behalf, and returning officer and council chief executive Tim Shields, who blocked him from speaking from the dais as he was neither a candidate nor an agent. ....

Liberal Democrat Tony Harms, has lived in Hackney for 34 years. For 20 years he ran a Hackney based Adoption Support Agency and is currently the Secretary of a Mental Health Charity.

Harms, who ran a local adoption support agency for 20 years and is the secretary of a mental health charity, has promised if elected to give residents “a real say in the running of their ward,” being of the belief that power should be in the hands of “local people who really understand the challenges.”
The Lib Dem candidate was secretary of the Stoke Newington conservation area advisory committee, sits on a patient and public involvement committee in the local health network, and is former vice-chair of the Lordship safer neighbourhood forum. ....

Residents have less than a week left to register to vote for the May 6 elections.

Residents are being urged to register to vote for upcoming local and regional elections, with just under a week left to ensure they can have their say.
Residents must be on the electoral register to vote on May 6, in the Mayor of London and London Assembly elections as well as council by-elections in Stamford Hill West, Kings Park, Hoxton East and Shoreditch and Woodberry Down wards.

Like many local residents, I was horrified that Network Rail has destroyed the trees and other vegetation on the railway cuttings in Stamford Hill.
The embankments at East and West Bank are part of a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINC) designated by Hackney Council. They are now completely bare, and the tree roots have been poisoned to prevent re-growth. This activity happened during the bird nesting season.
The reserve is one of the few green spaces in Stamford Hill West and has been home to numerous bird species and other wildlife. The area already suffers from pollution caused by our chronic traffic problems. This act of vandalism will further reduce the quality of the air we breathe, with implications for our health, particularly of our children, as well as for the wider problem of climate change. ....

Coronavirus: Hackney cases shoot through the roof

The number of deaths involving Covid-19 in Hackney and the City is currently low compared to the first wave peak in April, and in the week leading up to December 11, five Covid-19 deaths occurred in Hackney residents.
Following a sharp increase in deaths between March and mid-May, the number of deaths in Hackney and the City has been similar to the average number of deaths over the past five years, and in total, 263 deaths due to Covid-19 have been registered up to December 11 in Hackney.
In a video address, Hackney GP Dr Anu Kumar thanked people for the precautions they have taken this far, but added: Sadly however cases in the hospital are rising rapidly. ....
