Retail and hospitality footfall in town nears pre-pandemic

THE number of people visiting retail, hospitality and leisure businesses in Warrington is on its way to returning to pre-pandemic levels, new data shows.
This follows the easing of lockdown restrictions on July 19 – so-called ‘Freedom Day’ – which saw the end of legal limits on social contact across England.
As well as removing mandatory social distancing and mask wearing, although both are still encouraged, nightclubs were allowed to reopen and large music and sports events permitted to take place.
This has seen more people venture into the town centre to enjoy their new-found freedom.

Town centre footfall increases as Covid lockdown eases

A RISE in footfall in Warrington town centre as lockdown restrictions ease is providing hope for the future.
Shops, restaurants and entertainment venues in the town saw a boost in visitors following the reopening of indoor hospitality in May.
Although footfall remained below levels before the Covid pandemic, new figures have revealed, businesses are looking forward to a summer of recovering revenue lost over the past 18 months.
Statistics from Google use location data from phones and other personal devices to track trends in people s movement in different parts of their daily lives.
This compares footfall in areas where there is retail and recreation such as restaurants, cafes and shopping centres to a five week-baseline period recorded before the Covid-19 crisis. ....

Busy weeks for Warrington's shops and pubs as lockdown eased

PEOPLE flocked back to shops, pubs and cafes in Warrington during the first week of lockdown easing, figures show.
Location data from Google reveals that non-essential retail and recreation venues were much busier on Saturday, April 17 – the first Saturday since lockdown was eased – than the previous Saturday.
Although they were still far from reaching pre-pandemic levels.
The figures show average activity in Warrington s hospitality venues and non-essential shops was 32 per cent lower last Saturday than pre-pandemic levels.
But that was higher than on Saturday, April 10, when activity was 58 per cent below normal.

Budget hailed as providing 'reassurance' for businesses and families

Chancellor Rishi Sunak set out his ambitious financial plan in the House of Commons today, Wednesday.
The Conservatives say at the heart of the Budget are measures to build the future economy, levelling up across all regions of the UK and spreading opportunity everywhere.
The Budget confirmed:
-An extension of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme until the end of September, ensuring it continues to support employers as they begin to reopen. Two further grants will also be available to self-employed people – and the newly self-employed will also be eligible for both grants.
-A continuation of the temporary Universal Credit uplift for a further six months. The Budget also confirms new support for providing young people with new skills: including doubling the incentive payment to SMEs to take on apprentices of any age to £3,000, and £126 million to triple the number of traineeships next year. ....
