Pride will return to Norman this fall after taking a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Norman Pride Board announced this week.
Norman Pride is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 8-10; barring any unforeseen spikes in COVID-19 cases, the celebration will be on, said Pixie Quigley, the vice president of the Norman Pride Board.
Quigley said that for the LGBTQ2SIA+ community, which thrives on togetherness and having a strong support system, having to cancel Pride 2020 was extremely tough. ....

Davidson County Black community has hope and peace after Chauvin verdict

Members of Davidson County s Black community said they have hope and peace after a Minneapolis jury returned guilty verdicts Tuesday on all three charges against former police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd.
It s just hope . a little bit of hope, said Tina Royal a community leader in Lexington, and former president of the Davidson County Democratic Party.
Royal was crying when reached for comment but stressed it was happy tears and a release of anxiety after watching the trial and wondering if this jury would cast a verdict based on the evidence.
This is hope that our voices are being heard, she said. When you do bad things, you have to answer for them. You can t treat people wrong because of the color of their skin. ....

Katherine S. Dukes, retired jeweler

Katherine S. Dukes, 89, of Delmar passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family, Tuesday, April 13, 2021. She was born Aug. 23, 1931, in Laurel, a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Sadie Mae (Moore) Scott.
Miss Katherine and her late husband Gene opened Dukes Jewelers in Sharptown where they operated for several years before moving to Delmar in 1957. She truly enjoyed helping people with jewelry and watch repairs, and even in her later years continued to operate out of her home until just a few short years ago.
She was very active serving the Delmar community through memberships in the Delmar Lioness Club, the Delmar Lions Club, Order of the Eastern Star Adah Chapter 5 in Delmar, where she served as treasurer for many years, and Order of the Eastern Star Roelma Chapter 113 in Sharptown. She was also a longtime, active member of St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church in Delmar, where she sang in the choir for many years. ....

Lexington church will celebrate lives of slaves buried in mass grave in city cemetery

Their names are not known. Their birth dates, nor date of death are known. In fact, no one really knows how many bodies are buried in a mass grave site for slaves in the Lexington City Cemetery.
The Rev. Dr. Arnetta Beverly does know this, however the men and women buried near the single rock and slab marker deserve remembering.
We are the descendants of those slaves, she said. I think they need to be recognized because we really are standing on their shoulders.
Beverly s congregation at St. Stephen United Methodist Church will hold the second annual Service of Commemoration for the slaves buried at the site at 2 p.m. Feb. 21. The gravesite is near the North State Street side of the cemetery. The congregation held a commemoration and committal service last year at the cemetery. ....
