INDIANAPOLIS â Wetlands legislation that had seen compromises added that were favorable to environmental groups ended up passing Tuesday with those changes stripped, providing little protection to Indiana classified wetlands. The bill passed the House on a 58-40 tally, with numerous Republicans voting no on the final version, which saw amendments favorable to environmental groups stripped out at the last minute Monday. Lawmakers from northeast Indiana, where much of the stateâs remaining wetlands can be found, voted against the bill. They included Reps. David Abbott, R-Albion, Ben Smaltz, R-Auburn, and Denny Zent, R-Angola. The bill now returns to the Senate where its author, Sen. Chris Garten, can either agree to the amendments to the bill or send it to a conference committee between the House and Senate to work out differences. Once that process is complete, the bill advances to Gov. Eric Holcombâs desk for approval or a veto. ....
INDIANAPOLIS â A bill that would strip protections for designated Indiana wetlands has passed out of the Senate Monday and on Tuesday was referred to the Indiana House. On a 29-19 vote, Senate Bill 389, which would repeal Indianaâs wetlands law that protects many of the stateâs remaining wetlands that are crucial to the environment, particularly the lakes areas of northeast Indiana was passed. Sen. Sue Glick, R-LaGrange, who heads the Natural Resources Committee, voted against the bill. Sen. Dennis Kruse, R-Auburn, signed on as a late co-author to the bill and voted for it. âThis is not workable, it is not feasible and itâs certainly an endangerment to all that we protect and are trying to protect in terms of our lakes,â Glick told KPC Media Group last week. ....
ANGOLA â The Maumee River Basin Commission will be losing 40 years of experience from its board this year and that includes 16 with the resignation of Steuben County Commissioner Jim Crowl, who will no longer be serving because he is leaving office Dec. 31. Crowl has served on the Maumee River Basin Commission since he first became a Steuben County commissioner in 2005. He is leaving the Board of Commissioners after losing the June primary this year. âThis particular year has been difficult on the Maumee River Basin Commission,â said its executive director, Rodney Renkenberger, referencing the loss of tenured board members, including Larry Gilbert, the Steuben County surveyor who passed earlier this year who was one of two remaining founding board members of the Commission. ....
