Sleaford school opens renovated 1940s air raid shelter to public as it receives £3,000 towards project

William Alvey CofE School, in East Gate, is now welcoming visitors to The Alvey Air Raid Shelter, as it has been dubbed.
Renovation work began on the Second World War-era shelter in July of last year – the roof was repaired, a partition wall was removed, the rotting floor and unsafe benches were replaced, lighting was installed and a glass door fitted.
Overseeing the project has been headteacher Stephen Tapley and teacher and history coordinator Natalie Mason.
Now open for bookings.
It has been supported by crowdfunding donations topping £1,400 (see www.justgiving.com/campaign/air-raid) and, just recently, a £3,000 sum from the Johnson and Mukherjee Brothers Charity. ....

Coun Anthony Brand delivered his report at the virtual annual town meeting last Wednesday when he said civic functions and traditional official openings during his year could be “counted on one hand” due to restrictions.
A new historic guide to Sleaford’s cemetery was one project Coun Brand has led, with local historian Simon Pawley picking out interesting graves to create a written tour. The leaflets are availbale from the town council offices and other outlets.
He said he was looking at other walks to document such as touring the numerous mosaics and the buildings of notable architects Kirk and Parry. ....

Sleaford school's bid to acquire former pupil's war medals

William Alvey School carried out a research project to trace the details of all 72 of its former pupils that served and died in the First World War, leading to a plaque being erected on the wall outside.
They are currently renovating a Second World War air raid shelter within the grounds to become a museum and learning resource for pupils.
Now they have been contacted by collector Darren Howlett, the current owner of the medals that were awarded to former Alvey pupil Charles William Penson and his father, James Ambrose Penson. He is willing to sell the medals to the school and return them to the town. ....
