We are under attack right now. One need look no further than Russian hacking that has reached extraordinary proportions ranging from our election systems and electrical grids to deep probes inside U.S. corporations, including most recently tech giants, vital pipelines and essential food processors, and our federal government itself across multiple agencies.
The time has come for new types of responses.
Consider “old-style” responses:
(1.) Through its wanton hacking activities, Russia has effectively declared war on the U.S. However, if the U.S. responds in kind by launching a counterattack that shuts down broad swaths of the Russian economy electronically (as we presumably can do), the result will likely be retaliation and repeated escalations resulting in potential economic devastation on both sides. ....

Having listened to over 24 hours of testimony last month in our state legislature’s hearings on zoning and affordable housing, I’ve learned much about concerns on both sides of the aisle. Everyone is asserting a desire to address affordable housing, and the present affordable-housing-focused state legislation (Section 8-30g), while certainly advanced for its time when passed decades ago, clearly lacks sufficient teeth to get the job done.
The need to expand affordable housing was brought into sharp focus by Richard Rothstein’s seminal 2017 book, “The Color of Law.” It documents in horrific specifics the vast and pervasive role of our government at all levels and across all states, including our own, in imposing by law explicit, brazen and demeaning racial segregation of Blacks in American society, with segregation ....

Being proactive on well-conceived affordable housing proposals helps to take pressure from Hartford off Wilton for other ways to get to that result.
That can sound cynical, and there has been a charge recently leveled against our locally-elected state officials of cynicism in their alleged voting “no” on state initiatives to move us in various directions while knowing full well that the opposite result will come about given the composition of our state legislature.
The reality is, however, that the kind of pro-active thinking happening now on affordable housing in Wilton serves broad and good societal purposes even as it gives our elected officials evidence of forward progress to present in Hartford in opposition to, or major modification of, proposed legislative remedies. Moreover, it offers creative re ....

Over the last 30 days we’ve passed from violent takeover of our nation’s Capitol to inauguration of our new President to remembrance of the lives of the over 400,000 Americans lost to COVID-19.
That remembrance has been on both the national level and locally here in Wilton with separate services led by the Wilton Clergy Association and the Wilton Quaker Meeting.
Each service was powerful in its own way: The Quakers’ service offered extended quiet time for reflection in silent prayer for those lost to COVID and prayer that these turbulent times that are so challenging and so draining can yet become filled with peace. The Wilton Clergy Association’s service encompassed moving prayers, reflections and singing. It called upon us to have homes that are havens of peace, and in the words of Our Lady of ....
