The city Common Council voted 6-0 Tuesday night to authorize the borrowing of up to $2 million for emergency repairs to restore electric power to the Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Wastewater Treatment Facility.
Mayor Vince DeSantis described the accident at the sewer plant as “a disaster” that needs to be addressed “immediately, right now they’re operating much of the facility with generators.”
Sixth Ward Councilman Wrandy Siarkowski, a seven-year veteran member of the joint sewer board in charge of the wastewater facility, Tuesday night said the sewer plant started experiencing “rolling blackouts” sometime on Thursday. He said sewer plant officials brought in a consultant familiar with the plant’s early 1970s vintage power lines, which run through old Orangeburg pipes made from layers of ground wood pulp fibers, a type of piping in use before PVC pipes. ....

JOHNSTOWN Fulton County Emergency Management Director Steven Santa Maria has announced a higher fire risk through the week.
A social media item from the county fire coordinator indicates an “elevated” risk of fire spread this week. The New York state burn ban is still in effect until mid-May.
Santa Maria’s office states: “It’s beautiful outside. People want to clean up their yards and brush. That’s OK, but remember there is no open burning allowed through May 14. There has been several brush and grass fires over the last few days mainly caused by open burning. For the safety of you, your neighbors, and our first responders, and the protection of property, please follow the New York state burn ban rules.” ....

JOHNSTOWN The Glove Cities’ namesake again comes through in an emergency.
Fulton County Emergency Services Director Steven Santa Maria recently told the Board of Supervisors’ Public Safety Committee that he stands to get his hands on dozens of boxes of nitrile gloves important during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He also is assisting Montgomery County with the effort.
Santa Maria explained that nitrile gloves are part of the Personal Protective Equipment ensemble required for COVID responses.
He said they are being used by emergency management and emergency medical system workers at COVID vaccination clinics.
He said nitrile gloves are also used by law enforcement, including corrections; and by fire and EMS personnel. ....
