Johnstown Common Council approves $12.2M bond proposal | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 JOHNSTOWN – The Common Council Wednesday night voted unanimously to authorize City Treasurer Mike Gifford to go to the municipal bond market to obtain up to $12.2 million for capital projects the largest bond procurement in the history of the city. The borrowing was reduced from what has been called a $13.7 million “wish list” from the city’s department heads presented to the council on July 19. The lion’s share of the bonding is part of approximately $7.2 million worth of capital projects requested by the city’s independently-elected Water Board, and will be repaid by the city’s water customers and not through property taxes. ....
Johnstown Common Council will consider $13.7M bond proposal | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS JOHNSTOWN – Mayor Vern Jackson has scheduled a special meeting of the Common Council for tonight at 7 p.m. to discuss and then vote on a resolution to borrow up to $13.7 million for city capital projects. While Jackson in June had said he didn’t know whether the bonding process would be completed by the end of his term in December, the council now appears poised to move ahead with authorizing the borrowing before the end of July. First Ward Councilman Bradley Hayner said he anticipates the special meeting will take approximately “30 to 45 minutes.” ....
Treasurer candidate’s death leaves void in Johnstown community | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 JOHNSTOWN – The May 12 death of Thomas Suydam has left a void in his community and changed the political landscape of what had been shaping up to be one of the most consequential city treasurer races in recent decades. Thomas Suydam, a native of Gloversville, was a certified public accountant who had worked as a partner in the George J. Dorfman & Co. CPA firm, chief financial officer of plastic vial manufacturer Capitol Vial and had run a real estate agency in Mayfield on Route 30. After learning his incumbent City Treasurer Michael Gifford was not running for re-election in November after serving in the position since the 1990s, Suydam filed a petition to run for the office as a Democrat. ....
Gloversville Common Council approves $2M bond for emergency repairs | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The city Common Council voted 6-0 Tuesday night to authorize the borrowing of up to $2 million for emergency repairs to restore electric power to the Gloversville-Johnstown Joint Wastewater Treatment Facility. Mayor Vince DeSantis described the accident at the sewer plant as “a disaster” that needs to be addressed “immediately, right now they’re operating much of the facility with generators.” Sixth Ward Councilman Wrandy Siarkowski, a seven-year veteran member of the joint sewer board in charge of the wastewater facility, Tuesday night said the sewer plant started experiencing “rolling blackouts” sometime on Thursday. He said sewer plant officials brought in a consultant familiar with the plant’s early 1970s vintage power lines, which run through old Orangeburg pipes made from layers of ground wood pulp fibers, a type of piping in use before PVC pipes. ....
Fulton County Republicans announce candidates for office, including for county judge, Johnstown mayor | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS FULTON COUNTY The Fulton County Republican Committee announced 45 candidates for county, town and city elections Friday, including District Attorney Chad Brown for county judge and surrogate and Scott Jeffers for city of Johnstown mayor. Fulton County Republican Chairwoman Sue McNeil introduced the candidates at a rally in front of the county’s historic courthouse building in Johnstown. Despite frigid temperatures in the teens and nearly everyone in attendance wearing masks due to the coronavirus pandemic, the rally was well-attended by approximately 50 people, a good portion of whom were current or former elected officials. ....
