JOHNSTOWN – The May 12 death of Thomas Suydam has left a void in his community and changed the political landscape of what had been shaping up to be one of the most consequential city treasurer races in recent decades.
Thomas Suydam, a native of Gloversville, was a certified public accountant who had worked as a partner in the George J. Dorfman & Co. CPA firm, chief financial officer of plastic vial manufacturer Capitol Vial and had run a real estate agency in Mayfield on Route 30.
After learning his incumbent City Treasurer Michael Gifford was not running for re-election in November after serving in the position since the 1990s,  Suydam filed a petition to run for the office as a Democrat. ....

JOHNSTOWN A city councilman recently questioned some of the actions of the Johnstown Water Board regarding finances and personnel.
First Ward Councilman Bradley Hayner made his remarks during liaison reports given at the Common Council’s monthly meeting at City Hall.
Hayner, council liaison to the Water Board, noted the board met Feb. 8 and made purchases, But he also questioned the board’s $13,175 fee to pay attorney Bryan Goldberger, who has filed a legal petition against city officials. Goldberger filed a complaint on behalf of the Water Board, which alleges Mayor Vern Jackson and City Treasurer Michael Gifford have violated the City Charter in dealing with Water Department issues. ....

Johnstown approves PILOT agreements | News, Sports, Jobs

JOHNSTOWN The Common Council in special session Thursday night approved two Payment In Lieu of Taxes agreements with the new managers of the Trackside Homes I and Trackside Homes II housing complexes.
Action followed a presentation Monday night during the council’s regular meeting at City Hall by Lewis Brown of the Vesta Corp., which is taking over ownership of the Trackside units. The council had to wait until Thursday to approve the PILOTs because resolutions hadn’t been drawn up Monday night.
The council Thursday night first approved the agreement for Trackside I. The resolution indicated that Vesta Trackside LLC will “develop, own, rehabilitate and operate” the low-income complex. The 20-year PILOT is in the amount of $39,000 increasing by 2 percent annually payable to the city on or before March 1 of each year. Trackside I has 96 one-bedroom units; while Trackside II has 21 one-bedroom units and 89 two-bedroom units. ....

FULTON COUNTY The Fulton County Republican Committee announced 45 candidates for county, town and city elections Friday, including District Attorney Chad Brown for county judge and surrogate and Scott Jeffers for city of Johnstown mayor.
Fulton County Republican Chairwoman Sue McNeil introduced the candidates at a rally in front of the county’s historic courthouse building in Johnstown. Despite frigid temperatures in the teens and nearly everyone in attendance wearing masks due to the coronavirus pandemic, the rally was well-attended by approximately 50 people, a good portion of whom were current or former elected officials. ....
