Falmouth Residents Persistent In Push To End 5:30 AM Ferry

Falmouth residents have once again called for changes to the Steamship Authority ferry schedule that would drop the 5:30 AM freight boat out of Woods Hole.
About 120 participants logged on to a virtual Steamship hearing on Monday, May 3, to offer testimony against the proposed 2022 schedule, including an early morning freight run that has angered many Falmouth residents since it began in 2012. Woods Hole residents say the freight trucks cause excessive noise as they travel down Woods Hole Road starting before 5 AM. Many said they feel the Authority has not been taking their objections on this perennial issue seriously and doubt the boat line is looking into long-term planning as demand for goods and freight on Marthaâs Vineyard grows. ....

Senator Moran Files Bill To Give Mainland Ports More Power On Steamship Authority Board

State Senator Susan Moran (D-Falmouth) is proposing legislation that would change the voting structure of the Steamship Authority board of governors, eliminating the majority control of Nantucket and Marthaâs Vineyard.
The bill, called âan act relative to municipal equity on Steamship Authority operations,â would give filibuster power to the three minority ports of Falmouth, Barnstable and New Bedford.
As it is structured now, Marthaâs Vineyard and Nantucket each have a 35 percent weighted vote on the board. The mainland ports of Barnstable, Falmouth and New Bedford each have a 10 percent vote.
âSenator Moran has proposed legislation that would provide on this board the mainland communities an effective veto over any actions taken by the authority, if none of them votes for any action. The Islands would no longer have majority control of the vote,â Steamship Authority special counsel Steven Sayers said at the Tuesday, April 20, Steamship b ....

Task Force Seeks Solutions To Woods Hole Freight Traffic

Members of a long-range planning task force are looking to fix the noise and traffic issues caused by the Steamship Authorityâs Woods Hole to Marthaâs Vineyard ferry operations.
The group, which has met five times so far, will continue to meet for the next year or so and will make recommendations to curb the issues. Heavy traffic, both auto and freight, on the Woods Hole to Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs route draws ire from communities on both sides of Vineyard Sound. Members are still in the fact-gathering stage, Steven Sayers, former general counsel and consultant, told the Steamship Authority board of governors during their January 25 meeting. He updated the board on the progress of the task force and the traffic mitigation work group, both of which were formed last year. ....
