Australia’s has already significantly lifted the top marginal tax rate. Under John Howard the top rate kicked in at $60,000; now it is $180,000 – a threefold increase. Overall, Australia is a low-tax country. According to the OECD, the country has the fifth-lowest tax-to-GDP ratio across developed economies. And it has got lower. When Peter Costello was treasurer, Australia’s tax-to-GDP ratio was over 24 per cent; this year’s budget projection is 20.9 per cent. ....

Howard Springs in the Northern Territory is much more suitable because people have access to fresh air in which they can exercise. A simple solution for states is to set up caravan park-type accommodation with individual cabins with an en suite and an outside area such as a small covered balcony so people can get some fresh air.
