Shelby artist Cecil Norris highlighting in upcoming exhibit
Shelby native Cecil Norris is seeing his dream of becoming an artist come to fruition. The art instructor at Crest High School was selected to have a solo exhibition at Jeanne Rauch Gallery on the campus of Gaston College.
“I want to say it’s exciting, but it is a burden as well,” said Norris. “Yes, all the attention will be on my work but that comes with critics. And I will have to accept the responsibility of how people judge it, but I can also control the narrative.”
Norris found his true potential as an artist after he left his position with Holland and Hamrick Architects, saying he realized digital tools didn’t give him the same satisfaction. ....

The San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2021 with A Spirit of Disruption, an exhibition that reflects on the school s profound and sustained influence on contemporary art and highlights the contributions of generations of diverse artists and individuals often overlooked in the historical narrative of SFAI. Nasher Museum of Art Names Lauren Haynes Senior Curator

Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art has hired Lauren Haynes away from her post as curator of contemporary art and director of artist initiatives at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas. Haynes will step into the role of senior curator at the Durham, North Carolina museum on June 7. Her hiring follows the promotion of Nasher chief curator Trevor Schoonmaker to director of the institution.
“I am thrilled that Lauren is joining our team,” Schoonmaker said in a statement, noting that he first met Haynes in 2008 at “Barkley L. Hendricks: Birth of the Cool” at the Studio Museum of Harlem, where she worked from 2006. Haynes, who holds a BA in art history with a minor in African American studies from Oberlin College, established herself as an associate curator there with exhibitions such as “Stanley Whitney: Dance the Orange” (2015) and “Alma Thomas” (2016), which she co-organiz ....
