 Summer camp season for youth is back at Fort Hays State University. After all youth camps were canceled a year ago because of the pandemic, youth from near and far are gathering on campus this summer to participate in a myriad of activities.
On weekdays during June and July, youth can be seen making their way across campus, on their way to participate in some sort of camp, ranging from science to athletics, from math to music.
Those interested in math or science have the opportunity to enroll in programs such as robotics or engineering, through the Science and Mathematics Institute (SMEI) or the Kansas Academy of Math and Science (KAMS). ....

The Hays Arts Council Spring Art Walk will feature work by Picasso. Pablo Picasso may have died in 1973, but Picasso the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach lives on and paints to this day.   
“He is a magnificent painter, but sometimes he just isn t inspired, so he eats the paint and is all better,” said an April 26 Facebook post by the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. “For being a bug, he is rather adorable.”
The art walk has something for everyone, whether you prefer art paintings by bugs, written word, performance art or drum circles. ....

The Shafer Gallery will premiere an exhibit featuring Michael Knutson and Brian McCallum from Feb. 26 through April 1 with a virtual reception at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 26 via facebook.com/shafergallery. 
Knutson is an accomplished visual artist who works primarily as a painter and is an art instructor at Garden City Community College. He has an active national exhibition record of solo and group shows and has completed many public art commissions for intuitions such as the Sternberg Museum of Natural History. Game of Thrones' Dire Wolves Existed, But May Not Have Been Wolves


Though most people may know dire wolves from their many scene-stealing appearances in
Game of Thrones, they didn’t spring straight from the mind of George R.R. Martin. In fact, scientists have known about the long-extinct creature since the mid-19th century.
Until recently, it was widely believed that the dire wolf (
Canis dirus) was essentially a more muscular relative of the gray wolf (
Canis lupus), partially because their skeletons look so similar. But a new study published in
Nature suggests that the two species share much less than their appearances imply.
It all started when archaeologist Angela Perri, of Durham University in the UK, set off on an expedition across North America to locate dire wolf fossils from museum collections and see if she could extract DNA from them. Her endeavor was successful: As ....
