New Colorado law allows mentors at Pueblo's Youthful Offender Services prison

A new bill signed into law last week is a small statutory change that brings a large philosophical shift designed to help young prisoners get mentoring from older inmates and end the cycle of negative prison culture.
On May 6, Governor Jared Polis signed a senate bill into law that will allow housing of older inmates who will serve as mentors in the Youthful Offender Services prison in Pueblo. The prison houses violent or high-level felony offenders ages 14 to 19 and currently has a population of 183 inmates.
Now that the bill has been signed, Colorado Department of Corrections Executive Director Dean Williams said developing the program is underway. Inmates will have a big say in how that program will work. ....

Correctional staff have been able to get a COVID-19 vaccine since January under the state s phase system. Less than half of the more than 6,000 workers have gotten one dose of the vaccine so far.
“I m a bit concerned because I want a higher up and uptake of the vaccine than what we re getting,” said Colorado Department of Corrections executive director Dean Williams.
In some cases, the department has said its own staff were “likely” responsible for bringing the virus from their communities into prisons leading to massive outbreaks that, statewide, infected about 8,800 inmates and led to 29 deaths among incarcerated people. ....

A defendant may sue the correctional officer who shot him while he attempted to flee a courtroom, a federal judge in Colorado decided last week.
The officer’s “immediate resort to his firearm, and the large number of shots discharged, evince little to no consideration of whether such force was necessary, nor any effort to minimize the force used,” wrote U.S. District Judge William J. Martínez in a Jan. 20 order.
