Stony Brook's cancer center in application process for Nation Cancer Institute designation – The Statesman

SHAH ALI HAIDER SHANTO/THE STATESMAN
The Stony Brook University Cancer Center is currently in the application process to become a National Cancer Institute (NCI) designated Cancer Center, according to a report by Vice President of Health Sciences Kenneth Kaushansky.
The NCI currently has 71 total designated Cancer Centers within the United States. Becoming NCI designated would require Stony Brook to be on par with some of the top cancer centers in the country. The NCI will recieve Stony Brook’s application in October and evaluate the cancer center early Spring 2022, according to the report.
“Most of the NCI designated cancer centers are from very large university based programs, and most of them are from large cities,” Dr. Roger Kerzetes, the Cancer Center’s hematology/oncology fellowship program director, said. “We have all the research and clinical skills that we stand a good chance at designation.” ....

KRAS gene may drive immune 'evasion' in pancreatic cancer

These mutations occur in more than 90% of pancreatic cancer cases and drastically reduce response to immunotherapy.
A new study in
Nature Communications takes an initial step toward better understanding how KRAS drives immune evasion and demonstrates a lowering of the KRAS activity resulting in a more favorable immune environment to fight cancer.
Previous strategies to block the KRAS oncogene therapeutically have focused on counteracting its growth-promoting role in cancer.
“Instead, our study shows that oncogenic KRAS plays a profound immunosuppressive role in cancer maintenance, and that treatment of cancer will be improved by simultaneously inhibiting KRAS and activating immune pathways suppressed by the cancer,” says Oleksi Petrenko, research assistant professor in the department of microbiology and immunology in the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. ....

Study: Lowering the activity of KRAS gene can help fight pancreatic cancer

Study: Lowering the activity of KRAS gene can help fight pancreatic cancer
If clinicians could stop mutations of the KRAS gene in pancreatic cancer – which happens in more than 90 percent of pancreatic cancer cases and drastically reduces response to immunotherapy – the chances of improving treatment for this deadly form of cancer would be increased.
A collaborative study by Stony Brook University scientists, published in
Nature Communications, takes an initial step toward better understanding how KRAS drives immune evasion and demonstrates a lowering of the KRAS activity resulting in a more favorable immune environment to fight cancer.

Stony Brook University Hospital Named One of America's 100 Best, Again |

February 9, 2021

Stony Brook University Hospital has been named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals™ for 2021 by Healthgrades – the only hospital on Long Island to receive this distinction for the past three consecutive years.
The honor places Stony Brook University Hospital in the top two percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for its consistent, year-over-year superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems. Only five hospitals in New York State were named among America’s 100 Best Hospitals this year.
“This is the equivalent of receiving another A+ on our annual report card for quality care,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, senior vice president for Health Sciences at Stony Brook Medicine. “It places us among the top 2 percent of hospitals nationwide. More importantly, it measures results that make a significant difference in the lives of ou ....
