STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Castelton Avenue runs from Nicholas Avenue in Port Richmond to Jersey Street in Tompkinsville, passing through West Brighton along the way. Many vital structures have stood along the avenue, and many still stand today.
Perhaps the most memorable was the castle-like hospital built in 1890, The Smith Infirmary. The Ruskinian Gothic building was named after local doctor Samuel R. Smith, but was later known as the Staten Island Hospital. The hospital moved in 1979 to Ocean Breeze and abandoned this structure. The castle was deemed a hazard and demolished in March 2012. ....

100-year-old COVID patient survives virus, discharged from Staten Island University Hospital

She was admitted last month.
Pignataro had shortness of breath but thankfully she responded to treatment.
So Tina is a remarkable patient with a remarkable story, said Dr. Srikant Polepalli of Staten Island Hospital. She s 100 years old, she was born in 1920 right at the end of the Spanish flu and now she s here living through the COVID-19 pandemic and she s very soft-spoken but is a very strong fighter.
Pignataro wasn t the only one discharged. Her younger sister Marie was also hospitalized for COVID in the same field hospital. ....

Then & Now: Recreating Old Photos Of Staten Island

The New York Public Library s collection of photographs offers a visual record of the city s long history, along with providing a slow-motion look at the whiplash change that leaves New Yorkers nostalgic for any long gone era. We ve now chosen photos from the Library s catalog and reshot them to show how much more things have changed since they were taken.
Photograher Scott Heins traversed the five boroughs for the project, and says, Recreating these photos from NYPL s archive reminded me that if anything defines New York City, it s change. Almost every image from the 20th century is, in a way, impossible to recreate now due to new buildings being built, demolished, or remodeled beyond recognition. This process, of course, will never stop, and so if you are looking to make some classic Nostalgic New York photos, go out and take them now. Hopefully they ll age ....
