(Don Treeger / The Republican) Facebook Share SPRINGFIELD The Gunn Block on State Street was added as the 18th local historic district in Springfield on Monday night, and for community preservation activists such as Robert McCarroll, it never gets old. The City Council voted unanimously Monday to create the Gunn Block as a single-building historic district, hoping it will enhance preservation and reuse efforts. McCarroll, chairman of the Community Preservation Committee, praised the vote Tuesday and said there are numerous single-building historic districts across Massachusetts among the larger districts, as permitted by state law. ....

Believed to be the oldest still-standing commercial building in Springfield, the Gunn Block is across from the Springfield Armory National Historic Site and is already listed as a historic property by the city and state. The three-story block, built circa 1830, was stabilized last year by its owner, DevelopSpringfield, aided by a $250,000 grant from the Community Preservation Committee and $168,000 from the MassDevelopment brownfields program. ....
