Being hospitalized is no fun. Being hospitalized as a young child would be scary and incredibly difficult. The sterile environment would be far from the top of any child s wishlist of places to visit. But there is something you can do to help.

Staff at the Helen DeVos Children s Hospital recently announced they were out of some of their most popular art supplies and toys. They are asking for those wishing to donate to visit their Amazon wish list and purchase items on it that will in turn be given to a child in the hospital. Helen DeVos Children s Hospital posted to social media on Thursday afternoon asking for toy donations as they have seen an increase in hospitalizations.
The post had more than 3,500 shares and the hospital says they received over 100 phone calls about donations.
The hospital is asking for fidget spinners, Lego sets and other toys.
Tamara Potter with the Spectrum Health Foundation says every single toy is currently single use due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Spectrum Health hired a new leader to oversee its foundations.
The West Michigan health system said Wednesday that it appointed Kelly Dyer as incoming president of the Spectrum Health Foundation and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital Foundation, effective in late May.
The announcement comes after a national search for a successor to Vicki Weaver, the foundations’ current president who is retiring at the end of April after 28 years with Spectrum Health.
“Kelly is an enthusiastic and forward-thinking leader with a national reputation for effective philanthropy and a passion for cultivating high-performing teams,” said Tina Freese Decker, president and CEO of Spectrum Health. “Philanthropy plays an integral part in realizing Spectrum Health’s mission and vision, and Kelly’s leadership will further the success of the foundation as we provide innovative, high-quality clinical care close to home for the communities we serve.” ....

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. â For months, health care workers across the nation have been working to save lives while under direct threat of catching coronavirus. Many efforts have been made to show support for those workers, but some in Grand Rapids were left out.
On Tuesday, area Burger King restaurants brought meals to evening and overnight workers at Blodgett Hospital in East Grand Rapids. The restaurants previously donated meals to area hospitals in January, but realized that food only made it to workers on the day shift. ....

TCF Bank is giving $50,000 to the region’s largest employer and two local charities in the spirit of holiday giving.
The Detroit-based bank with West Michigan locations said last week that it is giving Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Health System $40,000 to support frontline and essential workers, $5,000 to Inner City Christian Federation to support its mission of delivering affordable long-term and emergency housing, and $5,000 to the Grand Rapids Downtown Market’s Education Foundation.
“We take great pride in supporting these three great organizations as they continue providing much-needed services to the residents of Grand Rapids,” said Krista Flynn, TCF Bank regional president for West Michigan. “Now more than ever, organizations that are most affected by the pandemic need our help.
