Countries around Europe find themselves in different stages in the process of deploying public-safety LTE capabilities. Officials from five European countries offered an update on their progress in deploying the capabilities during a webinar hosted by TCCA.
Belgium
In Belgium, the Astrid TETRA network provides voice services to public protection and disaster relief (PPDR), and in 2014, added data communications for its users through the Blue Light Mobile service. However, the Blue Light Mobile service is still a limited data solution as it does not meet mission-critical requirements.
In 2015, Astrid had to decide what it wanted to with the network moving forward because of its place in the equipment lifecycle, said Christoph Gregoire, director of technology and operations at Astrid. At that point, LTE and other new technologies were not mature so the operator ch ....

South African regulator ICASA to appeal court order halting spectrum auction

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa’s telecoms regulator ICASA will appeal a court order restraining it from proceeding with auctioning much needed-spectrum, it said on Tuesday.
The ruling is a setback for top mobile operators MTN and Vodacom, which are seeking to expand 4G capacity and to roll out 5G technology.
It also undermines South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s efforts to accelerate the economy by attracting new investment in the sector and creating jobs. He has cited the spectrum auction as an important economic lever for the country’s growth.
Chairman of the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) Keabetswe Modimoeng said the regulator was dismayed by the court’s decision but remained resolute that the licensing process shall in due course be finalised. ....
