Upgrade to Whyalla facility now in pipeline

Date Time
Upgrade to Whyalla facility now in pipeline
Since 1992, RSPCA South Australia has called the facility at 7 Cook Street Whyalla home. Surrounded by barbed wire and built out of concrete besser blocks, the building has resembled more a fortress than an animal shelter (in fact, it actually was a bikies fortress in a former life).
Thankfully, the old eyesore is about to get a long-overdue facelift, with Chief Executive Officer Paul Stevenson announcing plans to upgrade the facility within the next 12 months.
“It’s well and truly beyond its use-by date, and we would like to get the ball rolling on this as soon as possible,” explained Paul. ....

SPCA Dismayed By Crucial Funding Oversight

Thursday, 20 May 2021, 3:58 pm
SPCA is extremely disappointed that a budget bid for
further Government funding for its vital animal welfare
Inspectorate service has not been seen as a necessary
priority.
SPCA was advised today that its request for
additional funding was declined, following the
Government’s Budget announcement today. This will cause
upset for animal welfare supporters and heap more pressure
on SPCA, which is already stretched to the limit.
SPCA
Chief Executive Andrea Midgen says the lack of financial
support from the Government for a job which essentially sits
with the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI), is a bitter ....

RSPCA NSW signs Enforceable Undertaking

RSPCA NSW signs Enforceable Undertaking
The NSW branch of The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA NSW) will back-pay staff more than $220,000 under an Enforceable Undertaking (EU) with the Fair Work Ombudsman.
The workplace regulator commenced an investigation into the not-for-profit animal welfare organisation in 2019 after it publicly acknowledged that it had underpaid workers. RSPCA NSW became aware of the underpayment after being prompted by a query from an employee.
Between 2011 and 2020, current and former RSPCA NSW employees were underpaid entitlements under the Animal Care and Veterinary Services Award 2010 and a collective agreement.
Employees were underpaid a range of allowances and entitlements, including annual leave, public holiday entitlements, Christmas bonuses and superannuation. ....

Greensboro animal rescue sees increase in adoptions not returns

During the beginning of the pandemic, many animal shelters and rescues experience an increase in adoptions due to the “Stay At Home” order. Now that restrictions have been lifted, and people are spending less time at home, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of the Triad in Greensboro expected some animals to be returned. The SPCA says they are pleasantly surprised to report that this was not the case whatsoever. They say that, if anything, the time spent at home built a stronger bond between owners and their pets and gave owners more time to train them.Brenda Overman, the president and Founder of SPCA says that this is great news because if too many animals were returned, they would have had to start turning them away.“We would have had to quit taking in animals. So therefore, we did leave some vacant spots, just in case. Instead of, I mean we can have 30 dogs here, instead of having 30 we may have 25 or less in case animals do come back,” Overman said. ....

A person convicted of animal abuse could not own an animal or work in a position where animals are present for up to 15 years based on the number of offenses, under a bill advocates pitched Wednesday as a way to protect the safety of animals and prevent abuse. The legislation, which differs slightly between House and Senate versions (H 1824 / S 1111), was filed by Rep. Tram Nguyen and Sen. Michael Moore. At least 38 other states and Washington D.C. already have some form of animal possession ban statutes in place and supporters of the measure urged law ....
