Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The Juneau Assembly has several matters up for public hearing and action during its regular meeting Monday evening. An appropriation ordinance earmarks an additional $700,00 for the emergency individual assistance grant program. The current $2 Million appropriation is estimated to provide grants for 1,070 applicants. About 1,800 applicants remain. The $700,000 would provide awards to about 348 of them. A companion ordinance takes $700,000 from an earlier appropriation for the hospital to purchase COVID-19 testing equipment. CARES Act funding in either case. This change would allow the funds to come from the hospital s appropriation rather than the city and borough s funds. A related resolution directs that the $700,000 go lower income residents and exclude those who received housing assistance grants. ....
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) The Juneau Douglas City Museum held a short, outdoor reception on Monday afternoon for its newest exhibit. Called Dark Nights, Winter Lights, the exhibit is a string light display right next to the museum on Calhoun Avenue. It was designed by freelance director and light designer, Bill Conrow. When [the museum director] asked me to do this, I thought the perfect thing to do is to come up with something that symbolizes how we re all feeling right now, said Conrow. That s why I put the heart in the middle. Conrow worked with the Youth Employment in the Parks program through the Zach Gordon Youth Center to set the display up. He said they spent four afternoons through snow, wind, and rain to light up the park. ....
Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - The CBJ Assembly voted to accept the former Cornerstone property back from Alaska Legacy Partners and are not committing to allowing a youth homeless shelter at that location Alaska Legacy Partner had tried to develop senior housing at the property. They paid $350,000 to the CBJ. The CBJ later supported another senior housing project with a $2 million grant at Vintage Park that was proposed by Torrey Pines Development. The CBJ will keep the $35,000 down payment from Alaska Legacy Partners. The property is now assessed at $430,000. Tlingit and Haida Regional Housing Authority have indicated an interest in leasing the property for the shelter. ....
