The cleaning and repair of the Lady Erin monument at Market Cross Sligo needs urgent attention to allow it to be brought up to standard appropriate to its iconic status in Sligo according to councillor Cllr Arthur Gibbons. The monument was erected in 1898 to honour the centenary celebrations for the lost Sligo heroes who had fought in the insurrection of 1798. 2023 marks the 125th anniversary of 1798 and while it still a little bit away, Cllr Gibbons believes that because of the specific expertise required, planning needs to be put in place now to have the work done. Cllr Gibbon who previously served on Sligo Corporation pointed out that the The Lady Erin Monument also serves as a marker to signify the centric 1 mile to distinguish between the areas of Sligo Borough Council and Sligo County Council. ....
Sligo s coastline will feature heavily in a short film about surfing that is included in the line-up for this year s Dublin International Film Festival. Ebb and Flow features the experiences of three fearless females and their passion for surfing the waves off the west coast of Ireland. Filmmaker Alice Ward captures the mystical relationship these women have with the power and magnitude of the Atlantic Ocean s surf. Alice, originally from Dublin, moved to Sligo when she completed her multimedia degree at DCU. It was a spur of the moment decision, but one she has certainly not lived to regret. As a surfer, it was only natural that she would fall in love with the county. ....
The public health restrictions in place at present have disrupted many of our usual routines and also limited our options for leisure and exercise. However, the people living near Cloonacool it s all been a walk in the park. Last September a new walkway was developed in Cloonacool Community Park and it is proving to be a great amenity. The new walkway was constructed around the perimeter of the community park. Walking and running enthusiasts of all ages and abilities get to enjoy the sight and sound of mountain streams on each circuit which stretches to almost a kilometre. A further aspect of the scheme that has greatly enhanced its utility is the inclusion of night-time lighting. The fact that the track is 2 metres wide is also beneficial as it allows people to observe social distancing whilst exercising outdoors. ....
