My educator, mentor and friend, Michael Page, who has died aged 76, was a physical-organic chemist who made pioneering contributions to his profession over a career spanning five decades.
After studying chemistry at Brighton, then a PhD in Leicester and Glasgow, Mike moved to Brandeis University, Massachusetts, in 1970 to do postdoctoral research with one of the world’s most eminent physical-organic chemists, William Jencks. Together, using classical concepts, they reinterpreted the features that can account for rate acceleration in enzymes, showing there was no need to invoke any of the previously postulated special effects. Their research article Entropic Contributions to Rate Accelerations in Enzymic and Intramolecular Reactions and the Chelate Effect, published in 1971 in the journ ....

The University of Huddersfield is to launch a new Leadership Centre to provide practical leadership development which unlocks leadership potential and helps empower effective performance as organisations look towards a better 2021 following a challenging 2020.
Based at the 3M Buckley Innovation Centre (3M BIC), the Sir George Buckley Leadership Centre will officially launch at a virtual event on 19 January 2021 to support aspiring and senior leaders in the region looking to develop their leadership skills in 2021.
Named after Yorkshire-born leader and the University of Huddersfield’s new Chancellor, Sir George Buckley, the Centre will provide development programmes which strengthen leadership skills and empower inspiring, authentic, and effective leaders to meet the challenges of a fast-changing world.
